What many people don’t think about is that many of their plastic dishes and storage containers are leaching chemicals into their food. These plastics contain Bisphenol A (BPA). According to SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, studies have shown that these chemical can promote human breast cancer cell growth and lower sperm counts. Pregnant women, infants and children are especially at risk. When plastic is heated, it leaches chemicals 55 times faster than normal. So, never ever heat food in a plastic container.
SUBSTANCES are often added to plastic to help shape or stabilize it. Two of these plasticizers are :
1. Bisphenol – A (BPA), added to make clear, hard plastic.
2. Phthalates, added to make plastic soft and flexible.
Others like Petroleum – Based Coatings are often use, so that they do not falk apart when hold food and liquid.
In our Tibetan community using plastic items in every kitchen are very common. If you do use plastic, stick to number 1, 2, 4 and 5. Those are safest. Use glass or stainless steel containers.
